II. Primary Purpose of this Position

The Custodian is to provide maintenance and janitorial service to the parish facility and grounds to keep them in a safe, healthy, and functional condition. The Custodian oversees the physical plant, and safety systems. It is the responsibility of the custodian to complete any cleaning and maintenance needed or warranted in a timely basis that allows the Church and School to function effectively in its mission of evangelization, education, and worship. The custodian will work efficiently and appropriately with the other custodian to get this done.

*Keep the building in good working order

*Complete minor electrical, carpentry, fixtures, plumbing and other repairs in a timely manner.

*Coordinate professional repair subcontractors when necessary after approval from supervisor.

*Maintain up-to-date knowledge of building inspections, and security pertaining to building and occupants

*Maintain the air handling systems, heating systems, electrical system and water daily keeping it a safe and efficient manner.

*Maintain cleaning equipment and chemicals and insure their safe storage and use at all times.

*Maintain playground equipment.

*Keep proper logs and records per Catholic Mutual guidelines

*Use lift properly to change light bulbs in the Church following Catholic Mutual guidelines.

*Unlock the external church doors and chapel doors in the morning.

*Monitor building for safety and security issues.

*Assist with all inspections

*Assist school with safety drills.

*Acquire knowledge, and where necessary, obtain a license to operate and maintain equipment.

*Keep the garage orderly.

*Keep janitor room and closets clean and organized.

*Apply sand or salt as needed to the sidewalks and walkways to ensure safety.

*Remove snow from sidewalks, entrances and emergency entrances.

*Keep all emergency doors clear especially in the winter.

*Check and maintain the roof, removing snow off in the winter.

*Coordinate the snow removal in the parking lots and driving lanes.

*Clean the social hall and kitchen especially the floors after school lunch

*Perform routine tasks on a regular basis necessary to maintain clean, orderly building. These tasks include but are not restricted to

  • Sweep and mop all hard-surface floors
  • Dust all open surfaces
  • Empty trash and recycling containers
  • Wipe tables
  • Scrub and waxing floors
  • Vacuum all carpeted areas
  • Sanitize all restrooms
  • Clean drinking fountains and other stainless steel surfaces
  • Restock all paper and soap dispensers as needed
  • Clean windows
  • Sanitize building
  • Disinfect doorknobs

*Set-up and clean up for parish events including

  • Put up and take down tables and chairs as needed
  • Sweep and/or mop floors
  • Empty trash and recycling containers
  • Sanitize area before and after use

*Communicate and work with staff to get summer cleaning complete.

*Keep the pastor and business manager informed.

*Inform Staff of building issues as needed.

*Attend all required meetings

*Follow all policies and procedures

*Display a positive and friendly attitude during working hours with staff, guests and students.

*Order supplies and materials as necessary to maintain and repair facilities.

*Respond to repair requests quickly and with professional manner.

*Order equipment after consultation with supervisor.

*Submit any packing slips, order summaries, work orders, etc. pertaining to the physical building to Business Manager.

V. POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

  • Possess a minimum of one year experience in plant custodial and/or maintenance work.
  • Demonstrate evidence of good custodial management skills and techniques.
  • Possess good people and relational skills.
  • Demonstrate experience with safety regulations and codes.
  • Experience in use of cleaning materials, procedures for clean up, and disposal of hazardous or biological waste, or will learn within 30 days.
  • Experience in use of specific tools or implements required for the job, or will learn within 30 days.
  • Experience in methods and operations of scrubbing, cleaning, small building and equipment repairs, or will learn within 30 days.
  • Experience in painting, varnishing, plasterboard repairs, etc, or will learn within 30 days.
  • Have a current driver’s license and insurance to meet Catholic Mutual requirements
  • Successfully complete pre-employment physical as required by employer.
  • Successfully complete standard Diocesan background checks and motor vehicle checks.
  • Successfully complete VIRTUS training and maintain all Safe Environment Requirements of the Diocese of New Ulm and The Church of St. Peter.

The St. Peter Thrift store is a ministry of the Catholic Church of St. Peter. The profits of the store support the various ministries of the parish, namely social concerns and faith formation. The Thrift Store Supervisor manages the day-to-day affairs in a professional manner, is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the thrift store operation including the supervision and scheduling of staff and volunteers, acceptance of donations, sorting, pricing, and merchandising, cash management and facility maintenance and cleanliness.

*Operations and Store Management

  • Develop and implement written procedures for store operations, including opening, and closing the store; procedures for accepting, sorting, pricing donations; security procedures for staff and volunteers, handling of cash, and other relevant procedures as needed.
  • Train, enforce and follow all policies, standards and procedures of the diocese, parish, and store put in place to provide a safe environment, and recommend needed changes.
  • Prepare the cash register at beginning of the day
  • Unlocking the door at opening and locking the doors at closing
  • Making sure all customer are out of store before closing the store
  • Printing the daily management reports (Z report) from the cash register
  • Count the money in the cash register at end of day follow catholic mutual procedures
  • Filling out daily report, noting all discrepancies (voids, returns, or errors)
  • Putting all receipt, reports, notes, consignment sheet that are sold and cash in deposit bag
  • Bring the deposit bag to the bank and put in the night depository
  • Greet the customers warmly and ask volunteers to do the same
  • Oversee the processing of donated items; manage the rotation of items and the disposal of donated items in a timely fashion. Processes include: sorting, hanging, tagging, steaming, displaying and disposing of donated items.
  • Maintain all supplies in the store and keeping the Parish staff up to date with any ideas that need to be ordered
  • Ensure that all sales transactions (cash, checks, credit cards) are handled properly
  • Maintain and increase knowledge of resale, thrift, consignment and retail trends
  • Oversee backdoor issues such as donations that were left and the upkeep of the dumpster.
  • Identify maintenance problems at the store and communicate needs to the Business Manager to ensure a safe, pleasant, and clean working environment for staff, volunteers, and customers.
  • Conduct daily safety inspections by walking the store before opening to make sure floors are free of potential hazards. Ensure restrooms are in working order and isles are clear.
  • Support volunteers and staff on the sales floor with customer conflicts, pricing issues, etc.
  • Ensure the Thrift Store facility is kept clean and organized.
  • Observing safety and security procedures as applicable and reporting potentially unsafe conditions to management.
  • Staff Supervising
  • Supervise and train staff and volunteers; monitor work performance and provide ongoing feedback to improve productivity and employee job satisfaction.
  • Provide inspirational leadership to staff and volunteers, setting operational performance standards and offering training.
  • Participate in the hiring, supervision, and evaluation of staff. Mentor staff for succession planning
  • Engage in progressive discipline procedures when needed; write performance improvement plans that put corrective action in place to ensure staff is in compliance when necessary.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding all personnel matters
  • Develop schedules for paid staff and volunteers to ensure appropriate levels of staff and volunteer coverage to both reach the store’s financial goals and be able to provide excellent customer service.
  • Conduct regularly scheduled communication with staff to provide direction, guidance and oversight to personnel. Host staff meetings as needed to share information and engage in team building.
  • Resolve staff and customer conflicts and complaints.
